The Best New Zealand Tour for Solo Travelers: My EF Adventures North & South Island Experience
Milford Sound
Tongariro Alphine Crossing
Tongariro Alpine Crossing
New Zealand has always been on my bucket list. Not just because of the stunning landscape, but the endless variety of adventures for outdoor lovers like myself.
I spent two weeks adventuring in New Zealand with EF Adventures.
Through EF Adventures’ expertly curated Multi-Adventure New Zealand tour, I experienced everything from glowworm caves and volcanic hikes to fiords, glaciers, wine country, and world-class adventure sports — all without worrying about logistics, safety, or planning. As someone who normally plans every single detail of my trips, this was a game changer.
The best part was, the itinerary was packed with solo time to decompress and explore on my own. I realized that I had traveled to New Zealand solo — but I was never alone.
If you’re looking for the best New Zealand tour for solo travelers, a way to experience both the North and South Islands, or a guided tour that blends adventure, connection, safety, and ease, this might just be the most transformative trip you’ll ever take.
Why I Chose EF Adventures for My New Zealand Trip
I’m very comfortable navigating new countries on my own but New Zealand is vast and remote. Between internal flights, rugged terrain, and long travel distances, I wanted an experience that allowed me to fully immerse myself
— without burning out on logistics.
That’s where EF Adventures came in. They handled:
International and domestic flights
Airport transfers
Hotels
Ground transportation
Adventure logistics
Expert local guiding
Group coordination
All I had to do was show up. Ready to experience New Zealand without the planning stress? Explore my New Zealand Tour here.
Auckland: Where My New Zealand Group Tour Began
After landing in Auckland, I was greeted by our Tour Director, Lexi — a New Zealand native whose warmth, deep local knowledge, and calm leadership immediately grounded the entire experience. From the airport transfer to hotel check-in, EF Adventures handled every detail seamlessly. This allowed me to simply arrive — physically and emotionally.
We checked into Sudima Auckland City, then headed out for a stroll around the stunning Waitematā Harbour before preparing for our welcome dinner at Metita—where I officially met my fellow travelers.
This is where the magic really started, over elevated cuisine and shared stories. There’s something special about sitting across from people who, like you, chose adventure, curiosity, and community. It felt like the beginning of something meaningful — and it was.
Lake Taupō: Glowworm Caves, Volcanoes & Epic Adventure
Day Two: Glowworm Cave Blackwater Rafting
Our adventure began in an unforgettable fashion — floating through the Waitomo Glowworm Caves on a blackwater tubing tour. Did you know that glowworm caves can only be found in New Zealand and Australia? Drifting beneath thousands of glowing specks in total darkness felt like floating through an underground galaxy.
It was surreal, magical and completely unforgettable.
We checked into Millennium Manuels Hotel with an incredible view of Lake Taupo. Did you know that Lake Taupo is the largest freshwater lake in Australasia? It is roughly the size of Singapore. How awesome!
Day Three: Tongariro Alpine Crossing Hike
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing hike was one of the most challenging and rewarding hikes I’ve ever done — and I was glad to be doing it on a guided tour with Lexi and a few local guides. Having professional guides, a supportive group, and a well-paced plan made all the difference.
After an adventurous day, we dined at Edgewater restaurant at the hotel. One of the major upsides of experiencing NZ with EF Adventures was the dining coordination, especially after long days.
Rotorua: Forest Ziplining & Māori Cultural Immersion
Day Four: Ziplining + Māori Culture
On our way to Rotorua, we stopped at Huka Falls — a true bucket list moment on the North Island. When we arrived in Rotorua, we checked into Pullman Rotorua for two days of adventure.
Rotorua brought a powerful mix of adrenaline and cultural depth. On day four, we zip-lined through the forest, flying across suspended bridges at nearly 50 mph.
After that, we experienced a taste of Māori culture, including a Haka performance that was genuinely moving. We learned about traditions, stories, and the heritage of the Indigenous people of Aotearoa. The Māori cultural immersion experience included a delicious hangi buffet, and it was such a meaningful (and tasty) way to learn about a people and their culture.

Day Five: Mountain Biking the Redwood Forest + Rotorua Free Time
We kicked off an adventurous day in Rotorua with mountain biking through Whakarewarewa, the Redwood Forest. This trail network is considered a crown jewel in Rotorua’s adventure scene — and it absolutely lived up to the hype.
Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and, most importantly, patient, especially because this was my first-ever mountain biking experience. When trying a sport for the first time, it matters who your guide is — and ours made all the difference.
One thing I really appreciated was that EF Adventures intentionally built free time into the itinerary. Lexi offered suggestions like the Polynesian Spa or the Kiwi Hatchery, but it was totally left up to our preferences. That flexibility made the trip feel even more personal.
We wrapped up the day with a decadent tapas-style dinner at Poco. The food was unforgettable and officially became one of my fondest memories with our group.
Day Six: Pounamu Workshop + Travel Day to the South Island
We spent the morning at Mountain Jade for a Pounamu (New Zealand greenstone) carving workshop. This experience was incredibly enlightening. Mountain Jade pays homage to traditional Māori designs passed down through generations, and it felt like such a meaningful cultural experience to close out our time in Rotorua.
It was finally time to head to the South Island — and once again, EF Adventures handled all the travel and airport transportation. It was one of those moments where I realized how much mental energy I wasn’t spending, because everything was already taken care of.
Wanaka & Mount Cook: Alpine Beauty & Glacial Hikes
Day six: Wanaka Arrival + The South Island Exhale
Officially on the South Island, the drive to Wanaka was breathtaking, but the town itself felt like an exhale.
We checked into the Oakridge Resort, which had so many amenities that felt like exactly what we needed at that point in the trip. We also had dinner at the Stoaker Room, where the group decided to share the “Butcher Feast” — a massive communal spread that was easily one of my favorite meals in New Zealand.
Wanaka gave us space to slow down, reflect, and truly connect as a group. Between visiting the iconic tree (#ThatWanakaTree) and simply being by the lake, you could feel the sense of community deepening.
Day Seven: Aoraki / Mount Cook + The Hooker Valley Track
Day Seven brought us to Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park — home to some of the most jaw-dropping scenery in New Zealand.
We hiked the Hooker Valley Track, crossing swing bridges over glacial rivers and walking through landscapes surrounded by towering, snow-capped peaks. Mount Cook National Park was one of the reasons I wanted to visit New Zealand, and while there, I was truly moved by its scale and beauty.
That evening, dinner was on our own, but naturally, a few of us ended up wanting to stay together. We decided to check out Big Fig, and it was the perfect post-hike meal. Cozy, hearty, and exactly what I craved after spending the day out in the cooler mountain air.

Te Anau: Milford Sound & Fiordland: Kayaking Through a Dream
Day Eight: Te Anau + Farmhouse Experience
We headed toward Te Anau and made a stop at Woodstone Farm, where we learned more about New Zealand farming and rural life. It was one of those quieter moments on the trip that still made everything feel grounded and real — especially after so many high-adrenaline days.
There was something really special about stepping onto a working farm, meeting the people behind it, and seeing what daily life looks like outside of the “postcard” version of New Zealand. It was a reminder that New Zealand isn’t just dramatic landscapes and bucket list adventures — it’s also tradition, and a deep connection to the land. Plus, I witnessed my first sheep shearing and bottle-feed calves. This was a super cool experience!
After the farm visit, we arrived in Te Anau and checked into Distinction Luxmore, which became our home base for exploring Fiordland.
The day ended with dinner at Redcliff Bar & Restaurant, and it was exactly what we needed: a warm, relaxed meal with the group, good conversation, and that comforting feeling of winding down after a full day on the road.
Day Nine: Milford Sound — Kayaking Through a Dream + Glowworm Caves
If there’s one moment that still takes my breath away, it’s kayaking through Milford Sound. What an absolute dream come true. From the glacier-carved fiords to the towering cliffs and beautiful waterfalls, this was my favorite adventure.
We also explored the Te Anau Glowworm Caves, stepping into a space that felt almost unreal. It felt like New Zealand kept finding new ways to surprise me, even after we’d already experienced so much.
Day 10: Jet Boating + Kepler Track + Queenstown Arrival
EF Adventures really showed their range on this day. From jet boating on the Waiau River to hiking sections of the Kepler Track — one of New Zealand’s iconic Great Walks — every adventure pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way, and the reward was always the same: unreal views.
We then made our way to the adventure capital of the world, Queenstown, and settled into a pampered stay at Kamana Lakehouse. I still think about our dinner here — we shared a four-course meal at Nest, and it became a memorable dining experiences in New Zealand. It was one of those nights where you look around the table and realize how far you’ve come as a group.

Day 11: Whitewater Rafting + Relaxation
Queenstown brought moments of adrenaline and rest. From whitewater rafting on the Kawarau River to evenings spent soaking in the hot tub at Kamana Lakehouse overlooking Lake Wakatipu, these were the kind of days that felt both exciting and rewarding.
Day 12: Gibbston Valley + Gondola Views + Farewell Dinner
Slow mornings enjoying breakfast at Kamana Lakehouse gave way to big adventure days, and the rhythm somehow felt both energizing and restorative. Cycling through Gibbston Valley wine country — paired with a wine tasting — was exactly how I imagined a perfect Queenstown day.
We also took the gondola up for panoramic views over Queenstown, and it was one of those “pause and soak it in” moments that made the trip feel even more special.
This is where EF Adventures really nailed the pacing. They challenged us physically, but still left room to rest, reflect, and connect.
Our farewell dinner at Walter Peak Farm felt especially bittersweet. After an e-bike ride through Gibbston Valley wine country and a scenic lake cruise to Walter Peak, it was hard to believe that a group of strangers had become friends. Our Tour Director, Lexi, was instrumental in making this an experience of a lifetime.
