Why Spring is the Best Time to Visit Banff National Park
Banff National Park is a destination that has been on my bucket list for ages, especially after learning that Banff is part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site. With less than five (5) hours on a direct flight from Washington D.C., this is the perfect long weekend getaway. I started watching flights and found round trip tickets from D.C. to Calgary for a spring trip at half the cost! I knew I had to make it happen, so here I am.
As a self-branded outdoor traveler, I was utterly shocked at how ethereal the Canadian Rockies are mainly because I traveled there as an affordable and weekend option from Washington D.C.
Imagine my surprise when I realized that the 1.5 hour drive from Calgary airport to Banff National Park is an experience on its own.
This is officially my petition to add a spring visit to Banff National Park to the top of your bucket list. Not only it’s more affordable and just as beautiful, but it’s the best time to experience Banff National Park off season with fewer crowds.
From Washington D.C., United Airlines flies directly into YYC Calgary International Airport for round trips as low as $200. I use Thrifty Traveler Premium to track cheap flights from my preferred home airports. Especially for destinations that I absolutely need to snag a flight deal. Due to affordability, I’m in a season of where a destination picks me.

Best time to visit Banff National Park
The best time to visit Banff National Park is experience dependent (for example, you may want to experience the Northern lights during peak season). However, I recommend April, May, October, and November for fewer crowds, and affordable. During these months, you can also expect wintery experiences like the Northern Lights, along with snowy views.

Where to stay during your visit to Banff National Park
I booked a 3-night stay in Canmore, Alberta with a gorgeous mountain view of Three Sisters. Three Sisters are an iconic trio of peaks (Big Sister, Middle Sister, Little Sister) located near Canmore, Alberta, just outside Banff National Park. Canmore is a 25-minute drive to Banff National Park and a budget friendly stay option for experiencing Banff without sacrificing any of the experience.
I paid $143/night in downtown Canmore and put together a list.

10 Things to Do in Banff in Spring
There’s so much to do and see in Banff National Park in the spring. Snow-capped peaks, fewer crowds, and the return of vibrant turquoise lakes make this one of the most beautiful times of year to visit. My only regret during my trip was not having enough time to see everything.
Daily entry to Banff National Park in 2026 is approximately $9 USD per adult, $8 for seniors, and free for youth 17 and under. A family/group pass (up to 7 people in one vehicle) costs about $18 USD. Entry is free for all visitors from June 19 to September 7, 2026 through the Canada Strong Pass.
If you're planning a visit, here are 10 experiences that will make your Banff trip unforgettable.
Visit the Iconic Waters of Lake Louise

In spring, you may still see ice on the lake early in the season, which creates a stunning contrast with the surrounding mountains.
See the Dramatic Peaks Around Moraine Lake
Tucked in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, Moraine Lake is one of the most photographed places in Canada. While access varies depending on the time of year, the views here are absolutely breathtaking and worth planning ahead for.
Take in the Views from the Banff Gondola
For panoramic views of the Canadian Rockies, take a ride on the Banff Gondola. The gondola carries visitors to the summit of Sulphur Mountain, where you’ll find sweeping views of the Bow Valley and surrounding mountain ranges.
Walk Through the Waterfalls at Johnston Canyon
One of the most popular hikes in the park is through Johnston Canyon. The trail follows catwalks built into the canyon walls and leads to stunning waterfalls along the way. In spring, melting snow makes the waterfalls especially powerful.
Relax at Banff Upper Hot Springs
After a day of exploring, unwind in the historic Banff Upper Hot Springs. Soaking in naturally heated mineral water while surrounded by mountain views is one of the most relaxing experiences in the park.
Stroll Along Banff Avenue
The main street in the town of Banff, Banff Avenue, is filled with restaurants, boutiques, and outdoor gear shops. It’s the perfect place to grab a coffee, browse local shops, and enjoy views of Cascade Mountain in the background.
