3-Day Bedford County Itinerary: The Perfect Spring Getaway from Washington D.C.

Every spring, I find myself craving a reset—an pause from the fast pace of everyday life in Washington D.C. There’s something about the shift from winter to spring that invites you to slow down, soften your routine, and ease into a more grounded way of living.

One of the things I value most about living in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area is how accessible that reset can be. It doesn’t always require a flight. In fact, some of the most meaningful escapes are just a drive away—especially for someone like me who feels restored when I can trade city noise for fresh air and open space.

This spring, I found that reset in the heart of Bedford County, Pennsylvania.

Tucked within the Allegheny Mountains and the Appalachian Ridge and Valley, Bedford County offers a kind of quiet luxury—one rooted in nature, thoughtful experiences, and a deep sense of place. From the moment I arrived, it didn’t feel rushed or overproduced.

I arrived looking for fresh air and a slower pace, and I left thinking about the people I met, the conversations I had, and the level of care behind even the smallest details.

If you’re looking for a destination that allows you to truly slow down without sacrificing quality, this is it.

And honestly, the experience begins with the drive. Somewhere between leaving D.C. and arriving in Bedford County, the traffic disappears, the roads open up, and the scenery shifts into rolling mountains that immediately signal—you’re about to unplug.

Every spring season, I’m in need of a reset. An escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday living in Washington D.C. There’s just something about the season’s shift from winter to spring that calls for unwinding and easing into a softer pace with a quick getaway.

What I love about living in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area is that a reset doesn’t always require a domestic or international flight. Most of the time, I prefer—and actually prioritize—East Coast destinations that are drivable, especially as someone who feels most recharged when I’m surrounded by nature.

Where to Stay in bedford county

Woodhaven B&B is more than a place to stay—it’s an experience rooted in design, and rest.

Owned by Dan and Bryn Keller, this boutique property feels deeply personal from the moment you arrive. It’s the kind of place where you’re not just handed a key—you’re welcomed in.

Every detail—from the warm, thoughtfully designed interiors to the quiet, peaceful surroundings—encourages you to slow down in a way that feels natural, not forced.

Each morning, I woke up to the smell of breakfast being prepared, and Bryn would bring out a beautifully plated meal that felt both comforting and elevated. It wasn’t just “breakfast included”—it felt like someone genuinely cared about how I started my day.

And what I appreciated? The pace. No rushing. No noise. Just space to exist.

One of my favorite parts of staying here was how close it is to the Colvin Covered Bridge. I found myself taking a quiet walk there in the evening, with no agenda—just fresh air, stillness, and that soft golden hour light. It’s a simple moment, but it ended up being one of the memorable parts of my stay.

Day 1 in bedford county

Morning

  • Fishing at Omni Bedford Springs (Trout season starts April 4th)
I’ll be honest—this was my first time fishing, and I wasn’t sure what to expect.

But having Shannon, a Recreational Attendant at Omni Bedford Springs, as my guide made all the difference. She was incredibly patient, walking me through each step without ever making it feel intimidating. It felt less like a lesson and more like being guided by someone who genuinely enjoys sharing the experience.

After we spent some time by the water, she took me along the Black Springs trails tucked behind the property and showed me some of the natural pools. It added a whole other layer to the experience—quiet, scenic, and a reminder of just how much there is to explore beyond what you initially see.

What started as trying something new turned into one of the grounding parts of my trip. Standing there, fully present, focused on something simple—it slowed me down in a way I didn’t realize I needed.

Afternoon

  • Try Asian Fusion at Nudl
Nudl was one of those meals that stays with you.

I ordered the Korean Bao Buns, Thai Shrimp Satay and the Strawberry matcha with sweet cream boba and the flavors were bold, balanced, and thoughtfully layered in a way that didn’t feel overwhelming. It’s a modern take on Asian fusion, but done with a level of care that makes each dish feel considered.

As someone who has traveled extensively and experienced incredible food in different parts of the world, I don’t say this lightly—this meal stood out. It wasn’t just good, it was memorable. Chefs and Creators, Inge and Hideyo have truly curated a special dining experience right in the heart of Bedford County.

  • An Afternoon at the Eternal Springs Spa at Omni Bedford Springs
I booked the Luxurious G102 Facial (60 minutes), and it was exactly what my body needed.

From the moment I stepped into the spa, everything shifted—the lighting, the quiet, the pace. It didn’t feel rushed or transactional. It felt like time had slowed down on purpose.

During the treatment, I found myself fully unplugging in a way that’s rare for me. No phone, no distractions—just stillness.

When it was over, I wasn’t just relaxed—I felt reset. My aesthetician Magdalene sent me home with personalized recommendations based on my skin type, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Evening

  • Bedford County Trivia and Custom Fondue at Composition Art & Wine Bar
Composition is the kind of place you don’t just visit—you truly experience.

The moment I walked in, I noticed the art. Not just on the walls, but how it shaped the entire atmosphere of the space. It felt creative, intimate, and intentional all at once.

I spent time walking through the rotating exhibits, and what made it even more special was knowing that co-owner James has a working studio inside. It adds a level of authenticity you can feel—you’re not just surrounded by art, you’re in a space where it’s actively being created.

I ended the evening with a glass of wine, taking it all in, and it felt like the perfect balance of culture and relaxation.

And if you’re traveling solo, this is one of those places where conversation happens naturally. It doesn’t feel forced—it just flows.

Day 2 in bedford county

Morning

  • Breakfast at Woodhaven 1796

By the second morning, breakfast at Woodhaven started to feel like a ritual I looked forward to. Bryn brought out another thoughtfully prepared dish, and I remember sitting there, taking my time—no phone, no rush—just enjoying a slow start to the day. It’s a small thing, but it completely shifted how I moved through the rest of my day.

  • Kayaking & Birding Experience at Shawnee State Park
Shawnee State Park was one of those moments where everything gets quiet in the best way.

I joined a small group for a guided kayaking and birding experience with Haley Feaster (KTA & Hikes with Haley) and Jason Graham, Outdoor Recreation Coordinator for Bedford County. Even before we got on the park—they had already shared what to bring and made sure everyone felt prepared, which set the tone for the entire experience.

Once we were out for our walk, it was still—I could hear every sound around me. Jason pointed out different birds along the way, and I found myself paying attention in a way I normally wouldn’t. At one point, we spotted a robin, and I realized how rare it is for me to slow down enough to even notice something like that.

It didn’t feel like a scheduled activity—it felt immersive, personal, and genuinely calming. The kind of experience that stays with you long after you’ve left. Check out other attractions here.

Afternoon

  • Lunch at Horn O Plenty
A true farm-to-table experience that highlights the richness of the region. Mandi, the owner walked me through the sourdough making process, and I was floored. Every dish feels intentional, seasonal, delicious and deeply connected to the local landscape. The dining experience at Horn O Plenty alone is worth a visit to Bedford County.

  • Downtown Bedford Exploration

Bedford is where the trip slowed down even more for me.

It’s walkable, yes—but more than that, it’s the kind of place that invites you to wander without a plan. I found myself stepping into shops, having conversations, and spending more time than I expected in each space—not because I had to, but because I wanted to.

What stood out wasn’t just what I saw—it was the people behind each place.

Highlights include:

  • Mahendi – The moment I walked into Mahendi, I felt a shift. The space is calm, intentional, and beautifully curated with globally inspired pieces that feel meaningful, not mass-produced. I picked up their signature gold necklace, and it’s now one of those pieces I wear often—it genuinely feels like I brought a piece of Bedford home with me.

  • Pigeon Hill Studios – Right next door, Pigeon Hill Studios felt like stepping into someone’s creative world. Meeting Mari-Pat and hearing her talk through her process made the experience so much more personal. I ended up taking home one of her pieces, and now every time I see it, I’m reminded of that conversation and the care behind her work.

  • Kerr’s – Kerr’s felt like a true elevated shopping experience. The pieces are carefully selected, and it’s the kind of place where you don’t rush—you browse, you try things on, and you take your time. It felt less like shopping and more like treating myself to something special, especially the colorful sweater I tried on just in time for spring.

  • Peppercorn Market – I could have spent so much time in here. From shelves lined with specialty goods to locally sourced ingredients, everything felt curated for people who genuinely love food. I found myself picking up the Citrus Habanero Extra Virgin Olive Oil because I knew exactly how I would use it to spice up my salads. It’s the perfect stop if you want to bring a taste of Bedford home with you.

  • Twila’s – Twila’s stood out for its effortless mix of modern and timeless pieces. It’s the kind of boutique where everything feels wearable, versatile, and thoughtfully chosen. Twila is the perfect place to pick up a seasonal quilt to welcome a new season.

  • Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art (SAMA) – Walking through SAMA added another layer to the trip. I spent time moving through the exhibits and was especially drawn to the work from emerging artists—it made the experience feel current, not just historical.

  • Juli’s Wearable Art – This was a unique stop. Every piece felt like a statement, and you could tell there was a story behind the designs. It’s the kind of place where you find something you won’t see anywhere else. Like the Nora Fleming "Welcome, Friends!" Pineapple Mini – perfect for my at-home summer soirees.

  • Heritage Trail – After exploring downtown, I took a walk along the Heritage Trail, and it was the perfect reset between stops. Quiet, scenic, and easy—it gave me a moment to slow down again before heading into the evening. Find more trails here.

Evening

  • Dinner at LIFeSTYLE Trattoria
Dinner at LIFeSTYLE Trattoria was easily one the memorable experiences of the trip.

What I didn’t expect was a full four-course dinner with wine pairings—an experience that felt both elevated and deeply personal. The restaurant is owned by brothers Stefano and Davide, and throughout the evening, Chef Stefano personally walked us through each course, sharing the intention behind every dish.

We started with l’antipasto, a beautifully arranged charcuterie board that set the tone for what was to come. For the primi piatti, I chose the rigatoni Quadri alla Montecarlo—rich, perfectly cooked, and full of flavor without feeling heavy.

The secondi piatti was a wild-caught halibut filet served with a creamy vegetable sauce that was incredibly well-balanced and delicate. Then came the contorni, simple but done right—green beans finished with butter and parmigiano that somehow made you pause and appreciate how good simplicity can be.

And to end the night, il dolce—a chocolate colomba that felt indulgent in the best way.

By the end of the meal, it didn’t feel like just dinner—it felt like an experience. One where you’re fully present, taking your time, and appreciating each course as it comes.

    Absolutely exquisite.

Day 3 in bedford county

Morning

  • Coffee and breakfast at Black Valley Provender
Black Valley Provender was the kind of place you ease into your morning.

I ordered the overnight oats, and what made it even more memorable was learning that the recipe was inspired by Joe (one of the owners)’s trips to Germany. It’s such a simple dish, but the way it was prepared—balanced, flavorful, and thoughtfully done—completely elevated it.

It ended up being some of the best oats I’ve ever had, and I’m not even exaggerating when I say I wanted to take the recipe home with me.

Paired with a good cup of coffee and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, it felt like the perfect, unhurried start to my final day in Bedford County.

Afternoon

  • Wellness Session at The Union Hotel
By the time I arrived for my wellness session, I had already started to slow down—but this experience took it even deeper.

I met with Mona Shaw, a reiki master and teacher, and this was my first introduction to reiki. She walked me through the practice in a way that felt approachable and grounding, explaining the connection between mind, body, and spirit in a way that actually resonated.

What stood out was how intentional the entire session felt. It wasn’t rushed or surface-level—it created space for me to pause, reflect, and fully be present.

Before I left, Mona sent me home with a book so I could continue learning more about reiki, which I genuinely appreciated. It made the experience feel like something that extended beyond that single session.

Afterward, I stayed for lunch at The Union Hotel’s restaurant, and it couldn’t have been a better way to ease back into the day. I ordered the fried chicken and biscuits—comforting, well-prepared, and exactly what I wanted in that moment.

It felt like the perfect balance: grounding, reflective, and then gently reintroduced to something warm and familiar.

  • Seasonal Pop-ups at Omni Bedford Springs
I loved how Omni Bedford Springs incorporates seasonal pop-ups—it adds an element of discovery to the experience. It felt lively without being overwhelming, and it’s something I’d definitely recommend keeping an eye out for when you visit.

Evening

  • Woodhaven Brewing Co. for pizza and craft beer
Ending the trip at Woodhaven Brewing Co. felt like everything came full circle.

Knowing it’s owned by Dan and Bryn made it feel even more connected to the overall experience. I grabbed a sourdough pizza and a beer flight, and it was the perfect balance of casual and elevated.

Sitting there, reflecting on the trip, it felt like the kind of ending that just made sense—easy, relaxed, and genuinely enjoyable.
