A WEEKEND GUIDE TO TULUM, MEXICO.

It is my duty to figure out why you have not taken that trip of a lifetime. You are probably thinking: “I don’t have time, I have financial obligations, I have a family, I have a demanding job, I work on weekends, I have student loans, or I really DON’T have time.” These are all valid reasons why you have not traveled. Can I keep it 100 with you? It is mandatory to take a quick break and come back feeling refreshed and grateful for what you already have.

What if I told you, a weekend is all you need to knock out a beautiful country. Ein, uno, un, one weekend. I cannot make this up since I just came back from an epic weekend getaway. I don’t just want to recap what I did when I visited Tulum, Mexico. I want to teach you how to maximize three days and two nights in one country.

You: What does this look like Kris?

Me: Well you fly in Friday morning and fly out Sunday evening!

1. DON’T SLEEP.

This is the single most important advice I can give you, accept that you are going to come back more tired than you were when you left. If you are in a new city with no time, sleeping could be a waste of time you already DON'T have. Sleep on your way there and on your way back. Sleep during your tour transfers. Drink coffee or tea, whatever you prefer.

*NEVER fall asleep in a cab on your way back to your lodging. I want you to come back home, along with your loved ones. Keep in mind that this is for people who don’t just want to lay on the beach all weekend.

2. PLAN FOR 3 OR MORE ACTIVITIES.

I get a rush when I am in a new country. I want to see it all, eat it all and just about do it all. What does that look like? Start your day super early - 4 A.M. sounds about right. Schedule tours that start early to wrap up even earlier.

Plan activities around the same location, so you can knock out two or more in a day. This is not only important when trying to do a lot, but it also helps with saving on transportation.

Always include outfit changes between activities. I understand that you are not a blogger (trust me, we live a difficult life). Include an outfit change in case you want to do activities that include water or cause you to sweat - or if you just want a variety of content. I did not follow this advice, hence, I looked like I only packed a bathing suit top. Break for lunch and head back to your lodge for a shower and a nap. Get ready for dinner and a night out on the town with the locals.

3. MAXIMIZE YOUR LAST DAY.

Treat your last day as your last opportunity to do some exploring. I have a reckoning that you planned your weekend trip with the understanding that you should probably fly back in the evening. Wake up early and pack up your luggage. Have a coffee, a zen moment by the pool, a cheeky breakfast and head out. I would suggest catching the sunrise at the beach; taking some quiet time to reflect and document all that is happening in your life. P.S. Always pick lodging closer to the town. It makes a lot of sense when trying to call taxis at wee hours of the morning and evening. It is also cheaper.


6 THINGS YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS IN TULUM

  • Visit Chichen - Itza!

  • Take a swim in the famous ‘Cenotes.’

  • Catch the sunrise at the Beach.

  • Check out the IK Lab Fine Art Gallery in Tulum.

  • Eat at Azulik Tulum Restaurant. This is one of the most intricate and picturesque restaurants in Tulum. A bit pricey, but it’s worth it.

  • Experience the nightlife in Downtown Tulum. Have a walk around in the daytime too, talk to the locals and enjoy the food.
